What keeps relationships strong isn't grand gestures but small habits repeated in daily life. Here are five practices that quietly repair closeness.
1. Notice repair attempts
Every couple argues; the difference is how the argument is soothed. A joke, a touch, saying "I'm sorry" — these are repair attempts. Noticing and responding to them strengthens the relationship's immune system.
2. Don't turn a complaint into criticism
"I felt lonely today" is a complaint and can be talked about. "You're always so selfish" is criticism and triggers defence. Saying your need without attacking the other's character changes everything.
3. Stay curious
As years pass, we assume we "already know" our partner. But people change. Questions like "What tired you today?" or "What have you been curious about lately?" keep the bond fresh.
4. Magnify small moments
A hug when parting, asking how the day went on returning, putting the phone aside and really listening… Happiness is the sum of these small moments of contact.
These habits look simple but are powerful when practised consistently. If you keep returning to the same arguments, couples therapy can help you see the cycle from the outside and build a new language.
